IN RICH, debt-laden economies the policymaking horizon is short-term: a recovery is the priority. Very long-range forecasts from the OECD, a think-tank, may seem an exercise in irrelevance. But they are a useful reminder of the economic and demographic factors that keep grinding away in the background.

In particular, the OECD’s projections for 2060 (at constant purchasing-power parities) show the impact of fast catch-up growth in underdeveloped countries with big populations. Economic power will tilt even more decisively away from the rich world than many realise. In 2011 the current membership of the OECD made up 65% of global output, compared with a combined 24% for China and India. By 2060 the two Asian giants will have a 46% share of world GDP, the OECD members a shrunken 42%. India’s economy will be a bit bigger than America’s, China’s a lot.

Even so the Chinese and Indians will still be much less well-off than Americans (see chart). The same forecasts show GDP per person in China at 59% of that in America; in India it will be only 27%. And Americans will increase their lead over the citizens of some developed countries like France and Italy.

አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ ክፍሌ በሸዋ ክፍለ ሀገር በይፋትና ጥሙጋ አውራጃ በ፲፰፻፷፬ ዓ.ም. ተወለዱ። ለትምህርት ሲደርሱ በአካባቢያቸው የነበረውን የአገራቸውን ትምህርት ተማሩ። በኋላም ወደ ጎንደር ተጉዘው የመጻሕፍትን ትርጓሜ አጠኑ። በጊዜው የነበራቸው የቀለም አቀባበል፣ የሚስጥር መመራመርና መራቀቅ በጉባኤው ላይ «የቀለም ቀንድ» የሚል ቅጽል ተሰጣቸው።

አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ ከግዕዝና አማርኛ ሌላ አረብኛ፣ ዕብራይስጥኛ፣ ላቲን፣ ሌሎችንም ቋንቋዎች አጠናቅቀው ያውቁ ነበር። አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ በእየሩሳሌም ለ፳፪ ዓመት ተቀምጠዋል። በዚህም ወቅት ብሉይና ሀዲስ በሦስት ቋንቋ ጠንቅቀው አመሳክረው ተርጉመዋል። ኪዳነወልድ ክፍሌ በ፲፱፻፳፮ ዓ.ም. የመጀመሪያውን መዝገበ ፊደል አውጥተው ከልዩልዩ ቋንቋዎች ጋር በማመሳከር አሳትመዋል። የኢትዮጵያ ፊደል አመጣጡንና ባህሉን በውል አስተባብረው በማቅረባቸውም በጊዜው ተቋቁመው ለነበሩት ትምህርት ቤቶች መመሪያና መማሪያ ለመሆን በቅተዋል። ቀጥለውም ትንሽ አማርኛ ፊደል ከአረብና ከዕብራይስጥ አቆራኝተው አሳትመዋል።

አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ በተለያየ ዘይቤ ያቀርቧቸው የነበሩት ግጥሞች ለትውልድ ታላቅ ጥቅም ይሰጣሉ ተብለው የሚገመቱ ናቸው። እንዲያውም ኢትዮጵያ በምሥራቅ አፍሪቃ የብዙ ሺህ ዘመናት ነፃ አገር ባለፊደልና ባለቋንቋ የሆነች እሷ ብቻ ስለሆነች ትውልድ ያገሩን ትምህርት በመጀመሪያ እንዲማር ያካሂዱት የነበረው ቅስቀሳ በቀላሉ አይታይም። በዓለም ስማቸው የገነነ የሥነ ጥበብ፣ የኪነ ጥበብ፣ የጽሑፍ ባለአጉዛዎች የሚደነቁባቸው በራሳቸው ቋንቋ ጽፈው ለዓለም የአቀረቧቸው ሥራዎች ናቸው ይላሉ።

አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ ለኢትዮጵያ በአላቸው አቅም በብሔራዊ ስሜት ተነሳስተው ለታሪክ የሚቀርቡ በርከት ያሉ መጻሕፍት ጽፈው አሳትመዋል። በተለይም ከዘጠኝ መቶ ገጾች በላይ የሆነው «የሰዋሰው መጽሐፍ» ታላቅ እንደሆነ ይነገራል። አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ ለኢትዮጵያ ሥነ ጽሑፍ ታላቅ አስተዋጽኦ ያደረጉ ሰው ነበሩ።

አለቃ ኪዳነወልድ ክፍሌ በተወለዱ በ ፸፪ ዓመት እድሜያቸው፤ ሰኔ ፳፬ ቀን ፲፱፻፴፮ ዓመተ ምሕረት አርፈው ደብረ ሊባኖስ ተቀበሩ።

REAL EXCHANGE RATES

Theoretically, there are two principal definitions of real exchange rate:

· In external terms, defined as the nominal exchange rate adjusted for price level differences between countries, i.e. as the ratio of the aggregate foreign price (or cost)  level to home country’s aggregate price (or cost) level measured in a common currency.

· In internal terms, as the ratio of the domestic price of tradable to non-tradable goods within a single country.

The concept of external real exchange rate is derived from the purchasing power parity (PPP) theory that compares two countries and the relative prices of baskets of goods produced (or consumed). The internal real exchange rate is an indication of domestic resource allocation incentives in the home country. Within these two broad real exchange rate concepts we can have several alternative formulations or measures under different analytical frameworks
